1. Primo PW20 (10kg Bag)
Type: White stoneware
Best Use: Throwing, hand building, Raku
Firing Range: 1160°C – 1260°C
Fired Colour: White
Shrinkage: ~16% (wet to fired at 1200°C)
Absorption: ~2% at cone 6
Notes:
A reliable general-purpose clay used widely at KudoClay. Excellent throwing qualities, trims cleanly, and works well for both hand building and Raku. Low drying shrinkage makes it forgiving for attachments.
2. BRT Buff Raku Trachyte (12.5kg Bag)
Type: Coarse grogged clay
Best Use: Hand building, sculpture, Raku
Firing Range: 1000°C – cone 6
Fired Colour: Buff to dark brown with speckle
Shrinkage: ~4% (dry to fired at cone 6)
Notes:
A heavily grogged, textural clay ideal for larger sculptural work at KudoClay. Excellent thermal shock resistance and performs well in oxidation and Raku. Surprisingly workable on the wheel despite its coarse texture.
3. Mac’s Speckled MB2 (10kg Bag)
Type: Mid-fire speckled stoneware
Best Use: Throwing, hand building
Firing Range: Cone 6 (recommended)
Fired Colour: Warm buff with speckle
Shrinkage: ~12–13% total
Absorption: ~1–1.5%
Notes:
A popular clay at KudoClay made from NZ materials. Plastic, versatile, and suitable for both small and large work. Slightly more vitreous than earlier versions—avoid firing above cone 8 without testing.
4. Nigra2002 Black (10kg Bag)
Type: Black stoneware
Best Use: Functional and decorative work
Firing Range: 1000°C – 1240°C
Fired Colour: Deep black (liquorice at top temp)
Shrinkage: ~13–14% total
Absorption: ~0.2% at 1240°C
Notes:
A premium black clay used at KudoClay. Highly plastic and versatile. For best results, use zinc-free KudoClay clear glazes to maintain its rich black colour. Can also be burnished for a natural finish.
5. Keane Dark Matter (10kg Bag)
Type: Grogged dark stoneware
Best Use: Hand building, throwing
Firing Range: 1000°C – 1220°C
Fired Colour: Charcoal black with flecks
Shrinkage: ~12.5% total
Absorption: ~1.5%
Notes:
A strong, textural clay available through KudoClay, offering more structure than smoother black bodies. Works well across techniques. Use zinc-free glazes for best results with KudoClay clear glaze options.
6.Tokyo White (10kg / 20kg Bags)
Type: Fine white stoneware
Best Use: Throwing, fine work
Firing Range: 1220°C – 1280°C
Fired Colour: Crisp white
Shrinkage: ~12–14% total
Notes:
A premium white clay used at KudoClay as an alternative to porcelain. Smooth, highly plastic, and excellent for detailed work. Pairs beautifully with KudoClay glazes and most commercial mid-fire glazes.
7.Mac’s Mud Studio White (10kg Bag)
Type: Off-white stoneware
Best Use: Functional ware, throwing
Firing Range: 1150°C – 1280°C
Fired Colour: Off-white
Shrinkage: ~11% total
Absorption: <1%
Notes:
A dependable KudoClay studio clay with excellent workability and strength. Ideal for functional pieces. Take care with drying, as finer bodies can be prone to cracking if rushed.
