Beginner Pottery Classes at KudoClay Studio
Welcome to our Beginner Pottery Classes! Whether you’re interested in hand building or wheel throwing, our classes are designed to help you develop foundational skills in a fun, supportive environment. We recommend starting with one of our beginner hand building classes. We find people progress faster once they have the basics of what clay will do. The wheel is so much fun, but it is one of the more challenging skills to learn. Choose your class below, then fill in the enrolment form to secure your spot and get started on your pottery journey. Please note, all clay, glazes, and firings are included in the enrolment fee.

These classes are designed to provide you with a comprehensive foundation in using the potter’s wheel. It’s an immersive experience focused exclusively on the skills and techniques essential for creating stunning wheel thrown pottery.

- Clay Preparation: Learn the crucial steps of preparing clay, including wedging, mixing, and stacking, to ensure optimal workability and quality in your creations.
- Centring Clay: Master the art of centring clay on the wheel, a fundamental skill essential for creating balanced and symmetrical forms.
- Cylinder Exercises: Engage in cylinder exercises tailored to enhance your control and finesse in shaping clay, laying the groundwork for creating various vessel forms.
- Bowls and Trimming: Explore the techniques of crafting bowls and refining their shape through trimming, achieving smooth edges and impeccable proportions.
- Turning Tumblers into Cups with Handles: Delve into the process of transforming basic tumblers into elegant cups, complete with expertly crafted handles, adding functionality and aesthetic appeal to your creations.
- Commitment Requirement: We emphasise that mastering the potter’s wheel requires dedication and practice. During throwing exercises, you’ll invest time and effort focusing on learning the skills needed, as opposed to producing beautiful pottery. However, fear not! While there are exercises to refine your skills, you’ll also create functional pieces to take home and cherish.
Prerequisite: While this class is tailored for beginners, we assume a basic understanding of pottery-making. We recommend completing a beginner hand-building class or acquiring some prior knowledge of working with clay. This ensures you’re equipped with the foundational understanding necessary to fully immerse yourself in the wheel-throwing experience.
